Patriots join the pursuit of a young player to address significant defensive concerns.

The New England Patriots secured their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t mean second-year quarterback Joe Milton won’t still have a role on the team. The Patriots’ investment in Milton could lead to a trade with a quarterback-needy team, potentially netting a third-round pick, according to ESPN Cleveland analyst Tony Grossi.

Grossi also mentioned that the Cleveland Browns are not interested in trading for Milton, leaving only Kenny Pickett and Deshaun Watson on their roster. Watson is expected to miss the entire 2025 season after undergoing surgery for a re-ruptured Achilles tendon.

The Browns could still consider Milton, especially if they lack a reliable starter or backup after the 2025 NFL Draft. The Patriots hope to secure a third-round pick in a potential trade, similar to the deal that sent Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Drake Maye

Milton was drafted by New England in the sixth round (No. 193 overall) of the 2024 Draft, alongside Maye. Last season, he stepped in for the injured Maye, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the regular season finale.

It remains unclear whether there will be significant demand for Milton or if the Patriots might lower their trade expectations. However, teams dealing with injuries to starting quarterbacks or reliable backups may turn to Milton later on.
