On Tuesday night, the Buffalo Bills secured Joey Bosa, signing the star defender to a one-year contract worth up to $12.6 million. This is a great acquisition for Buffalo, as Bosa, 29, was regarded as one of the top free agents available. The Bills had to outbid both the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers to land him.
How did they succeed? It’s a classic story— they offered Bosa more money than anyone else. According to Mike Silver of The Athletic, shortly after the signing was announced, the Bills were the only team willing to offer Bosa over $10 million. The 49ers, hoping to pair Nick Bosa with his brother, offered less than $10 million, while the Dolphins’ offer didn’t exceed $8 million.

As the saying goes, money talks. Buffalo is a strong team for Bosa if he’s looking to compete, with a squad that came close to reaching the Super Bowl last year and a reigning MVP in Josh Allen. But the size of the contract played a key role, and in this case, it worked out in the Bills’ favor.
Bosa is now a well-compensated Bill, and both the Dolphins and 49ers will need to adjust their plans to strengthen their defensive lines.
