The New York Islanders have spent years teetering on the playoff bubble, but after Monday’s brutal 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers, their postseason hopes are fading fast. Now five points out of a playoff spot with just 22 games left, general manager Lou Lamoriello appears ready to shift into sell mode ahead of Friday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Islanders have officially begun trade discussions, with Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri emerging as prime trade chips.
“The Islanders have started trade talks involving some of their players, including Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri, and those discussions will continue throughout the week,” Pagnotta reported. “Monday’s loss essentially pushed them into the seller’s market.”
Islanders Open for Business—Who’s on the Move?
While Nelson and Palmieri are drawing the most attention, Jean-Gabriel Pageau has also been mentioned as a possible trade candidate. Nelson, a top-six center with a $6 million cap hit, has attracted interest from the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Winnipeg Jets, Vegas Golden Knights, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, Palmieri, a gritty veteran winger with a $5 million cap hit, has the Los Angeles Kings among his strongest suitors.

What’s Next for the Islanders?
With a game against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, the Islanders could delay any immediate moves, but Monday’s loss to the Rangers may have sealed their fate. Expect trade action from the Islanders before the deadline, as Lamoriello looks to reshape the roster for the future.
