Breaking News: Just In, Spurs HC Gregg Popovich receives a major boost as top star is cleared feature for Thunder-Spurs NBA Cup clash

The San Antonio Spurs had played without Victor Wembanyama in Saturday’s 110-93 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. It appears that San Antonio will be without its 20-year-old center in Tuesday’s NBA Cup game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama is rated as unlikely to play on the Spurs’ injury report due to a right knee contusion.

Wembanyama hit a tiny career milestone less than a week ago, scoring 50 points for the first time in his career. In a 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards, the 7-foot-3 star went 18-of-29 from the field, including 8-of-16 from three, and added six rebounds, one steal, and three blocks.

In a previous report, interim head coach Mitch Johnson stated that Wemby’s injury was “day to day.”

Spurs taking step forward in Western Conference

It’s still too early to speculate, but the Spurs appear to be better than previous season. Granted, improving on a 22-60 record isn’t hard. However, given their current pace, San Antonio expects to win 35 games. That is most likely not good enough to get them into the playoffs or even a play-in game, but it is a small step in the right direction.

The 2024-25 season will undoubtedly test this team’s resolve. Head coach Gregg Popovich is still out with a slight stroke. The 75-year-old handed over the reins to interim head coach Mitch Johnson. Coach Pop sent a message to Coach Johnson and the team during his vacation, according to NBA source Shams Charania.

“One message Gregg Popovich has sent in recent days to Mitch Johnson, the Spurs’ interim head coach, and other executives is, ‘Don’t worry about me. Focus on the objective at hand here in San Antonio: win and compete. And when I return, I’ll be back. “Don’t worry about me,” Charania stated.

Popovich is out indefinitely as he continues to heal.
