Montgomery, 27, has earned this extension after being a vital part of the Lions’ offense, and the deal ensures he remains a key fixture in Detroit’s backfield for at least three more seasons. The contract further solidifies Montgomery’s role as an essential piece of the Lions’ future plans.

Montgomery has rushed for at least 1,286 yards since joining the Lions in 2023, making him one of only nine such players. He has 17 touchdowns in that time, which ranks second in the NFL after Derrick Henry, Raheem Mostert, and Kyren Williams, all of whom have 18.

Furthermore, he has been remarkably consistent in terms of scoring. Montgomery has scored in 15 of the Lions’ 18 regular-season games and is on a seven-game touchdown streak coming into Detroit’s road matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6.

While dependable on game days, Montgomery has also proven invaluable in the Lions locker room, according to Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News.

“He is the kind of guy that sets the tone for the day of practice and the way that he finishes,” according to Montgomery. “You’ve seen some of these runs out there, and most people would stop at 25. “He’s going 50, 60, and 70 yards.”

It’s a good move by the Lions to sign Montgomery, who is thriving in Detroit after leaving the division-rival Chicago Bears after the 2022 season. However, with the addition of 2023 first-round selection Jahmyr Gibbs, the extension becomes even better, cementing a strong one-two backfield punch that will challenge any in the NFL for the foreseeable future.
