Charlton Athletic has had a busy summer transfer window as manager Nathan Jones works to make the squad at The Valley his own.
The Addicks manager made a few free transfer additions quickly after his arrival in February, but this summer has been his first true opportunity to construct the squad to his taste.
As a result, their chances for next season look promising. Jones worked well with the group he inherited, and one that includes some of his own additions is expected to propel them back up the League One table.
There are still players who could leave, though, and defender Lucas Ness is attracting interest.
Richard Cawley, a reporter for X, stated that the Charlton Athletic defender had fans elsewhere. He’s not fit right now after ankle surgery earlier this summer, but that hasn’t stopped him from appearing on other teams’ radars, it seems.
Lucas Ness, a 22-year-old academy graduate, underwent ankle surgery in the summer due to a minor issue he had been playing with. He is currently out of action.
The right time for a move?
It will be intriguing to see what Ness’ plans are for the new season.
He has previously established himself to be a reliable defender for Charlton Athletic, having appeared in 21 of his 44 first-team games last season. Under Jones, however, opportunities were limited, and at his age, he will be eager to start at The Valley on a regular basis.
If the manager and those around him believe Ness has a future with the club, extending his contract beyond the end of next season and loaning him out could be the best option.
If not, it would be best for everyone if a permanent agreement was reached. That way, Ness can settle into a new home and really get started as he strives to live up to his potential.
However, it is possible that a move will not occur until he has fully recovered from ankle surgery, so only time will tell how his situation unfolds in the following weeks.
Another centre-back needed?
If a move for Ness is approved, Charlton Athletic would most likely return to the transfer market in search of another body in the backline.
Alex Mitchell has already joined, having moved from Millwall on permanent terms. Alongside him are Rarmani Edmonds-Green, Macauley Gillesphey, Lloyd Jones, and Zach Mitchell, while Josh Edwards can also play on the left side of a back three.
The latter Mitchell is only 19 and might benefit from regular playing time, so Ness’ exit may open the door for another newcomer.
