There’s no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is one of the greatest players in both Green Bay Packers history and the NFL as a whole. Though he will eventually retire with a one-day contract to officially end his career with the team that drafted him, the four-time NFL MVP is currently considering his options for the 2025 season.
While it’s expected that Rodgers will join the Pittsburgh Steelers next year, should he continue playing, there have been previous rumors about him wanting to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings recently let Pro Bowl quarterback Sam Darnold leave as a free agent. In his place, they now have JJ McCarthy, the tenth overall pick in the 2024 draft, who missed his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL.
When the Packers traded Rodgers to the New York Jets before the 2023 NFL season, many joked that he might follow Brett Favre’s footsteps and eventually play for the Vikings.

And when the Jets released Rodgers earlier this offseason, that idea seemed more plausible. After all, McCarthy was recovering from a torn ACL and hadn’t played in an NFL game yet. However, despite Rodgers expressing his desire to play for Minnesota, the Vikings told him they weren’t interested in pursuing him at this time.
Still, if the four-time NFL MVP stays unsigned long enough, the Steelers could take a while to make a decision, giving Minnesota a chance to reassess McCarthy’s readiness. If McCarthy isn’t ready, the Vikings might reach out to Rodgers this spring.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Comments on Aaron Rodgers to the Minnesota Vikings
During his media session at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about the possibility of Rodgers joining their NFC North rivals.
“It would be a hell of a story, wouldn’t it?” LaFleur said, according to Sports Illustrated. “There are great players on every team, so if it works out, it works out. It’s not something that I’m going to constantly dwell on. Sure, you think about it during the week when you’re facing someone, but if it works out, good for them.”
Clearly, LaFleur isn’t giving much thought to the idea of Rodgers joining the Vikings. In fact, it seems highly unlikely to happen anyway.
