The Atlanta Falcons reached an agreement with a fast return specialist on Thursday. When free agency began, they lost their return specialist, Avery Williams, to the Philadelphia Eagles. In response, the Falcons signed Jamal Agnew, a former player for the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pittsburgh Steelers, to help fill the gap.
According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, Agnew signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. Agnew, 29, was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 190 pounds, Agnew started his career as a defensive back and return specialist, also contributing as a receiver.

In his rookie year with the Lions in 2017, Agnew returned 29 punts, two of which were touchdowns, earning him First Team All-Pro Specialist honors. He also led the NFL in punt return average, with 15.4 yards per return.
During his time with the Jaguars, Agnew expanded his role as an offensive weapon in addition to his return duties. He recorded 61 receptions for 641 yards and five touchdowns, along with 23 carries for 195 yards and one touchdown.
After dealing with injuries and spending time on the Steelers’ practice squad in recent years, Agnew is now healthy and ready to prove he’s more than just a special teams specialist.
The Falcons may be looking to fill the void left by Rondale Moore, who, after suffering a leg injury during training camp, never played a meaningful game for Atlanta. Moore is now with the Minnesota Vikings.
