Much of the discussion surrounding the Boston Red Sox’s spring training has centered on the third-base situation, particularly whether Alex Bregman will claim his spot at third base and move current slugger Rafael Devers to designated hitter. (So far, it certainly seems like that’s the case.) However, this isn’t the only tough roster choice that Alex Cora and his team are dealing with as Opening Day approaches. Another challenge involves one of baseball’s top farm systems, which features three of the sport’s best prospects: outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and second baseman (and occasional outfielder) Kristian Campbell. All three appear ready to make an impact at the Major League level, but the team’s depth chart leaves uncertainty about where, or even if, they can find room for them.

Having “too much talent” is undoubtedly a positive problem to have. However, if the Red Sox were hoping their Big Three would help compensate for a shaky spring, that may not be the case — especially after Thursday’s performance.

Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer all made a strong case for a spot on the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster. The Red Sox participated in one of MLB’s Spring Breakout games on Thursday night, where their top prospects faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays. With all three — Anthony, Campbell, and Mayer — in the lineup for a national TV audience, they wasted no time making it clear they’re ready to join the Major League team on Opening Day.
