This is undoubtedly more indication that Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel understands how to find a solid assistant for his staff. Jerry Mack was the running backs coach in Knoxville for three seasons, from 2021 to 2023, and did an excellent job.
Following last season, the NFL came knocking, and Mack left UT to become the Jacksonville Jaguars’ running backs coach. It appears that he will be one and done in the AFC South, since another opportunity has presented itself.
On Monday, Mack was offered and accepted the post as head coach at Kennesaw State. Vols supporters are overjoyed for Mack, and rightfully so.

Jerry Mack has been named the new head coach at Kennesaw State
“I am grateful and honored to be entrusted as the leader and standard bearer of our team,” Mack stated in a press release. “I’m looking forward to helping our young men build on the success of our program, obtain degrees, win championships, and develop into great citizens that our KSU family will be proud of.”
Mack is in his second head coaching position, having previously served as the head coach at North Carolina Central from 2014 to 2017. After that, he spent 2018-20 at Rice before moving to Tennessee in 2021. He accomplished a great job with the Vols offense before leaving for Jacksonville.
Mack will surely have his job cut out for him at Kennesaw State, however. Brian Bohannon, the former head coach, was sacked midway through the season after a 2-6 record. The Conference USA team then lost its last four games of the season under interim coach Chandler Burks.
A 2-10 record in 2024 was disappointing for the program, but in 2025, Mack will be ready to take over and bring Kennesaw State back on track. Tennessee supporters everywhere are rooting for Mack to succeed.
