The New York Mets are ready to go into overdrive after finishing 2024 two victories shy of the World Series. While outfielder Juan Soto would prefer to be penciled into manager Carlos Mendoza’s starting lineup, he has stiff competition. If the Mets can’t land Soto in what could be a record-breaking deal, how will president of baseball operations David Stearns proceed to construct his roster?
This winter, New York will need to fill several holes. Since homegrown slugger Pete Alonso has entered free agency, one position has become available. Another area to consider is the starting rotation, as Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana are all available. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report believes the New York Yankees will re-sign Soto to a 13-year, $569 million contract in his most recent set of predictions. While that would be disappointing for the Mets, the haul he expected would still be significant as they prepare to make another postseason run next year.
Miller predicts the Mets will sign three of the 12 players who rejected the one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer to multi-year contracts. It involves signing Alonso to an eight-year, $226 million contract and Severino to a three-year, $48 million deal. Those are both recognized faces, but Corbin Burnes is a new face. Miller expects to land in Queens on a five-year, $170 million deal. The Severino prediction seems about right. Spotrac estimates his market value to be $55.9 million over four years. However, the deals for Alonso and Burnes seem backward. Alonso’s market worth is $174 million over six years. Burnes’ market value is $180 million for six years, but other contract forecasts show him exceeding $200 million.
