The pressure appears to be rising on Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier. Napier is presently in his third year as the program’s head coach, but has yet to win a season.
There is little optimism that this season will break the team’s losing streak of three consecutive seasons. To date, the Gators have a 1-2 record and have lost their two most important games. Paul Finebaum revealed on Saturday’s “SEC Nation” that Napier’s tenure at Florida could be coming to an end.
“The people with whom I speak to around college football have moved on from him,” Finebaum told me. “They’re speculating about what happens next. That complicates things for him. He is still coaching. There are several complexities with the portal; should he travel sooner rather than later?
However, Florida may be able to get things started this week. They are up against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, whom Finebaum termed the “worst” team in collegiate football. A loss here could signal the beginning of Napier’s downfall, whilst a win could provide impetus for the rest of the season.
Florida will need to build up as much momentum as possible. They still have five games remaining against presently ranked teams, four of which are against teams in the top six. To have a winning season, the Gators must win at least one of those games while also winning the remaining games against non-ranked opponents. The Gators face the Bulldogs at noon ET on ESPN.
