The Green Bay Packers suffered a tough loss in their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil, falling by five points. However, the biggest blow came late in the game when quarterback Jordan Love sustained what appeared to be a serious ankle sprain.
Love limped off the field with the help of trainers, raising concerns about his availability for the coming weeks. Malik Willis briefly took over for Love, but his lack of experience in Green Bay’s offense was apparent.
Now, the Packers face the critical task of determining their next steps under center if Love is sidelined for an extended period. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, one option the Packers could consider is former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond, a free agent. Mond, a third-round pick in 2021 out of Texas A&M, has bounced around the league with brief stints in Minnesota, Cleveland, Indianapolis, and New Orleans but has very limited NFL game experience.
Though Mond wouldn’t cost Green Bay much and could add depth, the team might look elsewhere for a more seasoned veteran if Love’s absence is lengthy. Ryan Tannehill is a more experienced option, though signing him would come at a higher price. For now, much depends on Love’s diagnosis and whether the Packers believe Willis or Sean Clifford from the practice squad can step in effectively.
The Packers will need to act quickly as the uncertainty surrounding Love’s return puts pressure on the team to solidify their quarterback position ahead of their next game.
