Dallas Mavericks training camp will be here before we know it, and fans have already begun to circle dates on their calendars since the team’s schedule was released earlier this month.
Some noteworthy matchups include Klay Thompson’s homecoming to the Bay and a Western Conference Finals rematch against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas Day, but one major question remains unresolved this offseason.
Markieff Morris continues to push for Mavericks to re-sign him
It was reported a few months ago that Morris would re-sign with the Mavericks, but that has yet to happen. Morris has made it clear that he wants to return to Dallas for some time, and he reiterated his desire on Thursday morning.

Morris responded to a tweet about re-signing with the Mavs with the message “One of these days,” and he has been relentless in expressing his desire to play for the Mavs in 2024-25.
Morris scored 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game for Dallas last season, shooting 35.7 percent from downtown, but his biggest contribution came off the bench. Morris became as one of the team’s most prominent leaders, giving pregame and postgame speeches and offering advise to younger players as needed.
Everyone on the Mavs squad looked up to Morris, and Jason Kidd dubbed him the team’s MVP last season for his contributions. Morris is one of the league’s top locker room guys, and every club needs someone like him.
Morris spent 13 seasons in the NBA and has been in almost every situation. He also won an NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, and he brings that championship experience to the Mavs on a daily basis.
While Morris and the Mavs appear to be interested in reuniting next season, Dallas does not have an open roster space. To make place for Morris, they would need to cut someone, and A.J. Lawson is reported to be one of those players.
Lawson is a 24-year-old shooting guard for Dallas, and in order to keep Moris, the Mavericks may have to cut him because his contract is not fully guaranteed. Cutting Lawson to create place for Morris may appear to be a dangerous move given Lawson’s potential, but Morris’ value off the floor much beyond anyone’s expectations.
