Justin Herbert, quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers, practiced on Monday for the first time since July 31.
Herbert had been wearing a walking boot for two weeks after suffering a plantar fascia injury on his right foot.
The fifth-year quarterback did not participate in full-team drills, but he did engage in 7-on-7 practices.
Coach Jim Harbaugh was overjoyed to see Herbert back on the field wearing his yellow No. 10 practice jersey.
“I felt that music should be playing. I believed I had heard music. “Angelic voices, perhaps,” Harbaugh added. “It felt wonderful. He looked fantastic with a capital G. No drop-off, precise precision, very good.”
Herbert continued to attend meetings and work on his conditioning while wearing the walking boot. He will gradually increase his practice involvement as the Chargers gear up for their season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 8.
In addition to Herbert’s recuperation, having a dependable backup quarterback remains a problem.
Easton Stick, who started four games last season after Herbert hurt a finger on his throwing hand, has struggled in both preseason games. He played the first half against the Seattle Seahawks and Rams, but he committed three fumbles and led the Chargers to only three field goals.
Stick will start the preseason finale in Dallas on Saturday, according to Harbaugh.
Luis Perez signed on August 7 and played the entire second half against the Rams on Saturday. Max Duggan, a seventh-round draft pick from last year, was released on Monday.
