Max Verstappen’s victory at Zandvoort this weekend may place him on par with a Formula One great. The Dutchman has already won the Dutch Grand Prix three times in the last three years.
If he adds a fourth victory this weekend, the three-time world champion will tie Jim Clark for the most wins at Zandvoort. The Dutchman has also accomplished a significant milestone, which he will add to his seemingly never-ending list this weekend.
Verstappen will match Clark with a win at Zandvoort
Clark is an F1 legend. The Brit who raced for Lotus was widely regarded as a lightning-fast driver. He is regarded as a motorsport icon, having won 25 races and two world titles. Clark died in a horrific accident in 1968. He was only 34 when he died, but his legacy lives on. With four wins at the Zandvoort track, he still holds the record for the most Grand Prix victories in the Netherlands. This weekend, Verstappen has a chance to equal Clark’s record.
Verstappen has previously broken track records at the Zandvoort circuit. Last year, he won his eighth Grand Prix in a row, equaling four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. Verstappen may also break the record for most pole positions. If he wins his fourth pole in a row, he will surpass René Arnoux and become the sole record holder.
Milestone for Max: Race 200
Verstappen made his debut in 2015, when he was 17 years old. He drove the Toro Rosso at the Australian Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver in Formula One history. This weekend, at his home event, he will drive his 200th Formula One race. He has already competed in Formula One far more than his father, Jos, who competed 107 times. Fernando Alonso still holds the record for most races. The Spaniard, who drives for Aston Martin, will compete in his 395th Formula One race this weekend.
If Verstappen wins for the fourth time in a row at Zandvoort, it will be his 62nd Formula One triumph. This means he has won 31% of his Formula One races.
