The discovery of $400,000, ammunition, and a handgun inside one of its old cabinets is an unexpected twist. It seems the cabinet ended up being more than just a piece of nostalgic gaming history. The Western Australia police must have been quite astonished when they made this find. This story adds a whole new layer of intrigue to the legacy of Daytona USA!

That’s a fascinating and unusual twist involving an old arcade game cabinet! According to ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), the Western Australia police were investigating a Rebels bikie gang member when they discovered this hidden stash. During a traffic stop on July 28, police found $4,000 and an extendable baton in the gang member’s possession. This led to raids on his residence and a commercial property in Lansdale, near Perth.

At the commercial property, police found several old arcade cabinets, including one for Daytona USA. Inside the Daytona USA cabinet, they found a staggering $400,000 in cash and a Colt handgun. This discovery adds a new level of intrigue to the case, highlighting how contraband can be hidden in the most unexpected places.

WA Police Commander of State Crime Gordon Fairman emphasized the dangers posed by firearms in the hands of gang members, stating, “Whether the firearms are used to commit offences, or used to cause fear to victims who may be targeted, the risk of a person being seriously injured or killed in a confrontation increases when a firearm is present. We have seen the reckless disregard for community safety shown by outlaw motorcycle gang members, so we know the removal of these firearms from the hands of gang members has made our community safer.”

Daytona USA is indeed one of the most iconic arcade cabinets from the 1990s, a period just before the arcade market started to decline. Existing Daytona USA cabinets are valued at around $12,000 today. The game was a staple in arcades, movie theaters, and Chuck E. Cheese’s locations during its heyday. Notably, its adaptive difficulty system adjusted the challenge based on a player’s performance during the first lap, making it accessible yet challenging. Sega put significant effort into developing Daytona USA to surpass Namco’s Ridge Racer, utilizing all available technical resources to enhance the game. This dedication contributed to its lasting legacy in arcade gaming history.

That’s an interesting coincidence! Daytona USA was indeed the first game directed by Toshihiro Nagoshi, who later became well-known for creating the Yakuza series, now rebranded as the Like a Dragon series. This connection adds a fascinating layer of history to both the game and Nagoshi’s career.

Daytona USA 2, also known as Sega Racing Classic, can be played within one of the in-universe arcades in last year’s Like A Dragon Gaiden. This nod to Nagoshi’s early work showcases his lasting impact on Sega’s game development. However, it’s safe to say that the virtual version of Daytona USA 2 in the game doesn’t come with a hidden stash of $400,000 in cash, unlike the surprising real-life discovery in Western Australia.
