Erik Jones is currently without a contract for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, but FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass expects things to change soon.
Pockrass wrote on X Thursday that he believes Jones will stay with Legacy Motor Club next season, a race team he has been with since 2021, when it was known as Richard Petty Motorsports and then Petty GMS Motorsports until rebranding as Legacy in 2023.
“I believe Erik Jones will remain at Legacy for the next year,” Pockrass wrote. “When JGR [Joe Gibbs Racing] had the 19 opening, it seemed like that was a possibility but with [Chase] Briscoe there, think Jones stays.”
As Pockrass said, Jones was briefly considered a candidate to replace the retiring Martin Truex Jr. in JGR’s No. 19 vehicle. Jones competed with JGR from 2018 to 2020 in the No. 20 car, but the team instead signed Chase Briscoe.
Erik Jones struggling to compete in 2024
Jones appears to be sticking with Legacy for the foreseeable future. The 28-year-old has struggled since the team’s rebranding, placing a career-low 27th in the points standings last season. He is again ranked 27th after 22 races this season. He has, however, missed two races since sustaining a spine fracture at Talladega in April. Still, he has only one top-10 finish, a P8 in the Daytona 500.
Jones was 28th in this past Sunday’s Brickyard 400.
Corey Heim, one of NASCAR’s top prospects, is Legacy and 23XI Racing’s official backup driver, but he is unlikely to make the full-time switch to Legacy. Pockrass noted earlier this month that it “now seems unlikely he would fill this seat if it opens as he continues to eye a possible ride at 23XI in the next few years.”
Heim, 22, has won five CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races this season and finished in the top ten in four of his twelve Xfinity Series appearances. He has made three starts for Legacy this season.
