Barcelona has signed point guard Juan Nunez, the 36th overall pick in last month’s draft, to a three-year contract, the Spanish team stated today in a press statement.
Nunez was technically picked by the Pacers on June 27, but his rights and cash were dealt to the Spurs for Johnny Furphy, the No. 35 pick. San Antonio will retain Nunez’s NBA rights while he plays in Barcelona.
While the specifics of Nunez’s new contract in Spain are unknown, previous reports indicated that the pact with Barcelona would allow him to opt out and accept an NBA contract during the 2025 offseason, providing he’s still in the Spurs’ plans at the time.
Nunez, who will represent Spain in the 2023 World Cup, has spent the previous two seasons with Ratiopharm Ulm, where he won the German League title in 2023. In 14 EuroCup games in 2023-24, he averaged 10.4 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 25.9 minutes per game, with a shooting line of.505/.361/.537.
According to our record of draft selection signings, Nunez is the second 2024 pick to become a draft-and-stash player, following Mavericks second-rounder Melvin Ajinca.
