The 18-year-old striker had an enormously successful half-season loan stay with Gateshead, scoring 10 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions and helping Rob Elliot’s team win the FA Trophy.

His performances at the International Stadium have apparently piqued the interest of Sunderland and Newcastle United, with other clubs throughout the country keeping an eye on the promising youngster.

Despite receiving at least one phone call every day from interested parties, Warne has underlined that Derby are not in a rush to allow the youngster move this summer.

“I normally get one phone call about him a day, from one club who wants to sign him,” the Rams’ manager told BBC Radio Derby. “I am not in a hurry to let him go, but I also don’t want to impede his advancement. So, sadly, Derby comes before a player, and that is the truth.

“He is currently staying within the camp until further notice.” But I try not to pick players based on their reputations; if he is the finest striker in the building, it would be foolish not to play him. He has a long way to go. We’ll see him again in the next several preseason games and take it from there.

“If I think it is better for him to go out on loan then there are plenty of suitors, but you get nine on the bench and you need to keep players when you can.”
