Myles Johnson, a four-star linebacker, has decided to depart Alabama’s class, a decision that has long been expected. Johnson committed to Alabama and Nick Saban in October and was one of the only 2025 commits that remained with the Tide after Saban’s retirement. The Brewton native did not play his junior season due to a ruptured ACL, and he was unfortunate to play a position that Kalen DeBoer and the rest of the new staff have done an excellent job recruiting.

For these reasons, Johnson’s decommitment is neither shocking nor terrible. Quality inside linebackers Duke Johnson, Abduall Sanders Jr., Jaedon Harmon, and Luke Metz have already committed to Alabama in 2025. It is also strongly contested by Ty Jackson, one of the greatest linebackers in the country.

On Wednesday, Alabama lost the commitment of three-star athlete Zymear Smith. Smith committed in March, shortly after receiving his Alabama offer, and was one of the first pledges during the Kalen DeBoer tenure. An energetic two-way player from Maryland, he was anticipated to play defensive back at Alabama. Even after Smith’s departure, blue-chippers Chuck McDonald, Derick Smith, and Dijon Lee form a star-studded secondary class for the Tide, which is anticipated to increase.

While Myles Johnson and Zymear Smith are both excellent prospects who will most likely have great college football careers at the Power Four level, the Crimson Tide has a lot to be optimistic about. This summer’s recruiting news has been far more positive than negative, and the departures of Johnson and Smith open up additional space in a 2025 Alabama class that is gaining steam.
