Jayson Tatum’s spectacular summer continues with a contract extension.
Jayson Tatum’s summer has hardly just begun.
After winning his first NBA championship, taking center stage at the Boston Celtics triumph parade, and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Boston Red Sox game, he now has the most lucrative contract in NBA history.
According to various reports, Tatum and the Celtics reached an agreement on Monday afternoon for a 5-year, $314 million maximum contract.
He eclipsed his teammate, Jaylen Brown, who received a $304 million extension last summer, the highest contract in league history.
Tatum, however, will not keep the distinction for long, since Dallas Mavericks phenom Luka Doncic will be eligible for a projected $346 million extension next offseason.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jayson Tatum’s contract also includes a player option for the final year and a trade kicker, which serves as a no-trade clause to some extent. If Tatum opts into the last year of his contract, he will be paid $71.4 million in the 2029-30 season, making him the first player in NBA history to earn at least $70 million in a single year.
This season, the former Blue Devil averaged 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three. Despite averaging 25.0 points per game in the playoffs, he was not voted the Eastern Conference Finals Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals.
Jayson Tatum will be back on the court soon, which was critical in the timing of the contract, as he will report to Las Vegas later this week for the USA Basketball Men’s National Team training camp before competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he hopes to win his second gold medal.
