Luke Cheng is Ole Miss baseball’s new Rebel for the 2025 season.
Ole Miss baseball has been quietly active over the last month, collaborating with both sides of the NCAA Transfer Portal. They’ve lost 12 players through the portal thus far, with one day till the initial window shuts, but there’s still time and talent available.
According to Inside the Rebels, experienced Illinois State shortstop Luke Cheng can be removed from the transfer portal market and added to Ole Miss’ 2025 roster.
The graduate transfer has previously played four seasons for Illinois State, but both of his junior and senior seasons were marred by injuries. Cheng did, however, start 41 games for the Redbirds over that time period.
Cheng hit.270 over four years at Illinois State, totaling 99 hits, 59 runs, 56 RBIs, one home run, and seven stolen bases. Cheng concluded with a career fielding percentage of.944.
Despite playing in only 16 games (all starts) for Illinois State this season, Cheng was on track for a career year. The 6-foot, 180-pound infielder hit.373 with 19 hits, 13 runs, 11 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of.522 before his 2024 season ended.
Cheng now joins Ole Miss’ 2024 transfer class, which also includes catcher Collin Reuter (BYU) and right-handed pitcher Will McCausland (St. Joe’s).
