Charlton Athletic Face Championship Battle For Highly Rated Alfie May Replacement

According to the latest reports, Charlton Athletic have been looking for a replacement centre-forward to replace Alfie May if he is sold.

Huddersfield Town, who were recently relegated from League One, were reportedly hoping to sign May this summer in order to return to the Championship. Michael Duff, the Terriers’ new head coach, was the striker’s former boss at Cheltenham Town and the one who first brought him to Gloucestershire in 2020.

Furthermore, Football Insider reported last week that Huddersfield had agreed a £750,000 fee with the Addicks to sign May, but Richard Cawley of the South London Press held a contrarian position on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that there had been no monetary agreement between the two clubs regarding a possible transfer.

In a new development in the transfer situation, Football Insider revealed that Birmingham City were prepared to hijack Huddersfield’s quest for May, having offered £775,000 to Charlton Athletic for the 30-year-old. Cawley later confirmed this disclosure, alleging that the South London club accepted the Blues’ offer.

In an exceptionally difficult season for Charlton, as the club flirted with relegation to League Two, May managed to score 25 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, finishing as League One’s leading goalscorer with 23 in 43 games.

The Addicks will have a difficult time replacing their talisman, who arrived only 12 months ago, but they are turning to the Championship to do so. According to Football Insider, Nathan Jones’ side has switched its focus to Coventry City forward Matt Godden, who is in the final year of his contract at the CBS Arena.

Charlton Athletic Target Confirms Birmingham City’s Departure

The 32-year-old scored nine goals in 41 appearances for the Sky Blues last season, but he is expected to quit the club this summer. Furthermore, the site claims that Charlton will face competition from newly promoted second-tier side Oxford United after Swansea City expressed interest in Mark Harris’ signing.
