Birmingham City has ‘hijacked’ Huddersfield Town’s bid for Charlton forward Alfie May.
According to Football Insider, the St Andrew’s outfit outbid the Trotters’ £750,000 bid for League One’s top scorer last season.
A £775,000 bid is said to have been made and accepted by the Addicks, allowing the 30-year-old to begin talks with the Blues about a future move.
Charlton, who recruited May from Cheltenham for £250,000 last summer, appreciated Huddersfield’s approach as well. Nonetheless, Birmingham’s last-minute offer has put them in the driving position as new manager Chris Davies seeks to create a squad capable of returning to the Championship at the first opportunity.
May, who has a year left on his Valley deal, has 66 League One goals in three seasons, including 23 last season, which surpassed Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop’s (21) and Barnsley’s Devante Cole’s (18).
He’s certainly a player who knows where to find the back of the goal in the third tier, which is precisely what Birmingham needs as they attempt to negotiate what appears to be a difficult division next season.
Last season, Blues’ highest scorer was on-loan Fulham attacker Jay Stansfield, who scored 12 league goals as the St Andrew’s side finished third from bottom in the Championship standings. Jordan James, a midfielder, finished second behind Stansfield with eight.
Davies made his first signing as Blues manager last week, signing goalkeeper Ryan Allsop for an unknown amount. Everything points to May being his second transfer of the summer, as the Blues seek to assemble a promotion-winning squad.
