The Miami Heat face multiple personnel dilemmas this offseason, with Jimmy Butler’s future receiving the most attention this summer. Miami also has the opportunity to pursue potential trades while keeping Butler.
According to Bleacher Report’s most recent suggestion, the Heat would acquire Atlanta Hawks standout Trae Young. The Hawks could be on the verge of rebuilding after trading Dejounte Murray following the NBA draft.
Miami’s trade proposal includes sending Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and Nikola Jovic to Atlanta in exchange for Young. As part of the blockbuster transaction, the Heat will also send the Hawks two future first-round picks (2029 and 2031).
“You give up Tyler Herro, who I think goes in any star deal,” the Bleacher Report expert explained during the June 29, 2024, live webcast on potential NBA deals that could take place before free agency. “He is merely a piece ready to be moved.
“You give away Duncan, who makes the money work, and you give the Hawks a shooter who might maybe be traded again. Jovic is a youthful talent, and there are two intriguing first-round picks, with Jimmy Butler’s future uncertain.
Heat Guard Tyler Herro Still Has 3 Seasons Remaining on a 4-Year, $120 Million Contract
Miami could be keen to move on from Herro’s four-year, $120 million contract, which has three seasons left. Herro faces a significant $29 million cap hit in 2024-25.
So far, the Hawks have been unable to secure a deal for Young, prompting the front office to negotiate a trade. Atlanta has at least one viable scorer in Herro, though the guard has struggled with injuries in recent years. The Hawks would most likely prefer to make these potential draft picks sooner than 2029.
Herro appeared in just 42 games for Miami last season. In his limited outings last season, the guard averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while shooting 39.6% from long range.
Will the Hawks Hit the Reset Button by Striking a Blockbuster Trade With Trae Young?
Atlanta might take two different courses now that Murray has left the franchise. After the Young-Murray backcourt experiment failed to meet expectations, the Hawks could return to building a squad around their remaining star guard.
In the coming months, Atlanta may choose to reset and move more starters, such as Young and Clint Capela. In this scenario, Atlanta would rebuild around new No. 1 selection Zaccharie Risacher.
Young has three seasons remaining on his five-year, $215 million contract. The point guard has a player option for his last season, allowing him to enter NBA free agency as soon as 2026.
Trae Young Prefers a Trade to the Lakers, Spurs or Pelicans: Insider
Prior to the Murray trade, Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer claimed that the Hawks planned to “gauge trade possibilities” for Young and others.
The NBA insider mentioned the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and New Orleans Pelicans as teams Young would love to join. Miami may potentially make some sense as a franchise capable of revitalizing Young’s value, considering the team’s solid reputation in The Association.
“The Hawks are certainly expected to now gauge trade possibilities for Murray, All-Star guard Trae Young, Clint Capela and the rest of their rostered players who aren’t named Jalen Johnson and Zaccharie Risacher, sources said,” Fischer reported in an article published on June 28, titled, “Brandon Ingram expected to become available for trade as wing market comes into focus.”
“Young does have the Pelicans in mind of preferred possible next teams, league sources told Yahoo Sports, in addition to the Spurs and Lakers, but Young’s fit has never made much sense for a New Orleans situation that currently features C.J. McCollum in its backcourt.”
