Even though Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs won the championship last season, there are still aspects of their game that require work. For example, their wide receiver group is ranked in the middle of the NFL, providing them even more motivation to improve ahead of the 2024 season.
Last season, the Chiefs confirmed their status as a dynasty by becoming the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots in the early 2000s. Under Andy Reid’s sustained leadership, the Chiefs won their 11th consecutive season and eighth straight AFC West division title.
While the club was unable to improve on last year’s remarkable 14-3 record, they cruised through the playoffs, making their sixth consecutive participation in the AFC Championship Game. A crucial 17-10 road victory over Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens advanced the Chiefs to their fourth Super Bowl in five years, where they will meet a familiar adversary, the San Francisco 49ers.
In a dramatic Super Bowl LVIII rematch, the Chiefs won in overtime, capturing their second straight championship. Their suffocating defense, which ranked second in the NFL in yards and points allowed, was critical in shutting down their formidable playoff opponents. The Chiefs’ repeat victory established their place as one of the best teams in the modern NFL era.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Wide Receiving Corp Ranked Right in the Middle of the NFL
Aside from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City’s offense is also reliant on its wide outs. However, in a piece authored by Trevor Sikkema, the PFF put their wide receiver corps exactly in the middle of the league.
“Even with Travis Kelce, the Chiefs finished 2023 with only the 18th-ranked team receiving grade. They have subsequently updated with Hollywood Brown, Mecole Hardman, and Xavier Worthy. If Rashee Rice can improve on his performance last season with the new players around him, this should be a better team,” Sikkema stated.
Last season, the Chiefs finished first in the AFC West, with 11 wins and six losses. In addition, they had the 15th-ranked offensive and the second-best defense among the 32 NFL clubs.
It remains to be seen how the Chiefs’ wide receivers will perform in the next season. In any event, many people will be checking in to see if the current champs will defend their championship later this year.
