The Blue Devils have an intriguing conundrum on the recruiting path.
The Duke basketball program has yet to get a commitment from a player in the Class of 2025, but that hasn’t stopped Jon Scheyer and his coaching staff from beginning their search for 2026 prospects.
According to his father, the Blue Devils have initiated contact with St. John’s Bosco (Calif.) phenom Brandon McCoy Jr.
McCoy Jr., a 6-foot-4 point guard, is the top-ranked player in the 247Sports Composite. Interestingly, he is currently tied for first place in the rankings with Tyran Stokes of Prolific Prep in California.
Scheyer was able to contact 2026 players on June 15, and while Duke did not make any formal offers to prospects, the Blue Devils have made it known which prospects have piqued their interest early in the evaluation process.
Despite not receiving an offer from Duke yet, McCoy has offers from UCLA, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Oregon, and others. He has not made any official visits during his recruitment process.
The Blue Devils have also contacted Jordan Smith, Caleb Gaskins, Caleb Holt, and Jalen Montonati, all 5-star 2026 prospects, as well as Miikka Muurinen, a 4-star recruit. More interest in other players is expected to grow throughout the summer.
Jon Scheyer has stated that he does not expect Duke will have many more huge recruiting classes consisting of five or six freshmen, as the Blue Devils presently have on campus.
He expects his program to continue its pursuit of top-tier high school talent while filling out the balance of its roster with players from the transfer portal. This offseason, Duke signed four players via the portal while returning only two from previous year’s team.
The Blue Devils were unaffected by transfers last summer, whether players left or entered the program.
