The Los Angeles Rams made two important roster acquisitions during the minicamp and training camp break: Ahkello Witherspoon and Demarcus Robinson. Witherspoon played the most snaps of any Rams defender, and Robinson was a valuable asset in the team’s last push for the playoffs.
When asked if the Rams planned to do the same during this year’s break between camps, Sean McVay answered the following:
“[It’s] probably a little different than last year’s approach, but what we’ll do is look at ‘all right where are we at right now’, understanding that there are still some limitations in terms of the evaluation process, but ‘what are the resources that we have to be able to have the most competitive team going into camp. Probably not to that level, but I would never claim that nothing could come up. Because we believe that by taking a rigorous approach, we will be able to develop the football squad.”
Different Than Last Year’s Approach
The Rams were in a different position last season, with the most significant difference being financial. Last season, they had to wait until the dust settled before finding bargains in free agency. This year, the Rams were significantly more active in the first wave of free agency, signing Jonah Jackson, Darious Williams, Tre’Davious White, Kamren Curl, and Jimmy Garoppolo while also re-signing Robinson.
The Rams are a considerably more complete club now than they were last year. The approach varies depending on the squad.
However, as Sean McVay stated, if they can enhance the team, they will.
Where the Los Angeles Rams Can Still Look to Improve
Although they are under the cap, the Rams do not have an infinite budget to work with. Over The Cap says they have $8.6 million to work with. So, as Sean McVay stated, they will need to be disciplined in their signings. And from a financial standpoint, the first item of business is to ensure Matthew Stafford is satisfied with his deal. Aside from that, the Rams have a number of concerns that may be solved with smart, low-cost signings.
Defensive Line
The Los Angeles Rams have invested extensively in the draft over the last two years, resulting in a significant dearth of experience following Aaron Donald’s retirement. As of today, it appears that the Rams will start two rookies and two second-year players in four of the five starting places.
Linebacker
If Ernest Jones is injured, the Rams will be in a difficult situation. Jones is not just the team’s sole good linebacker, but he also has the most experience on the defensive front.
Jones missed one game due to injury last season, and his absence was noticeable. Without Jones versus Green Bay, the Rams allowed the third most yards and rushing yards of the 2023 season.
Defensive Back
One cannot have too many. Two, the Rams must prepare a backup plan in case White does not fully heal from his grade 3 Achilles damage.
