According to a well-known MLB insider, the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros will be looking for two specific senior sluggers who may become available before the MLB trade deadline on July 30.

Entering today’s MLB games, the Mariners are in quite different situations in the American League West rankings. Seattle has caught fire in recent weeks and has used that momentum to take the division lead. On the other hand, Houston is roughly eight games behind the Mariners and has been unable to break out of their season-long rut.

Despite their differing division standings, both teams are likely to buy before the MLB trade deadline next month. Interestingly, MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes they may be eyeing the same pair of multi-time All-Star first basemen in the coming weeks.

In a Tuesday piece, the former MLB general manager examined the different trade rumors and rumblings throughout the league. Pete Alonso, a New York Mets All-Star, “is expected to be the biggest power bat traded” this summer, and Bowden listed both teams as among the six most possible landing locations for the guy who has hit 40 or more home runs three times in his career.

This is not surprising given the recent links between each organization and Alonso. However, he mentioned another well-known first baseman as a potential target for the AL West clubs. If the St. Louis Cardinals fail to turn their season around and become a strong Wild Card contender, seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt could be available.
