Texas football is receiving some troubling news regarding one of its top recruiting targets. According to On3, five-star wide receiver Jaime Ffrench no longer considers the Longhorns his primary school. Ffrench is keeping an open mind during his visit to Baton Rouge and LSU football.
“I don’t have a leader,” Ffrench told Sports Illustrated. “LSU transformed it and made it competitive. However, everyone is currently enrolled in one, two, and three schools. It is pretty back open right now.”
Ffrench is a wide receiver and a member of the 2025 recruiting class. He is a prominent figure from Jacksonville, Florida. He caught 62 receptions for 1,247 yards in the 2023 season, according to On3. He also recorded 14 receiving touchdowns. In his sophomore season, he had 671 reception yards.
Ffrench is contemplating Texas, LSU, Miami, Tennessee, and Florida State. Sports Illustrated reports that the receiver will unveil his college choice on August 30. The Longhorns are certainly hoping they can still grab the top prospect.
Texas football supporters should not give up hope. While the Longhorns aren’t the wideout’s first choice, they are still very much in the running for his services. Ffrench is slated to visit the Texas football program from June 21 to 23. Ffrench is one of the top receivers available in the 2025 class. According to the on3 industry rankings, he is the 23rd best player in the country.
Texas football heading to a new conference
The 2024 season is critical for the Longhorns. For its inaugural season, Texas football will compete in the Southeastern Conference. After several years of membership, the institution, along with Oklahoma, left the Big 12. Texas made it to the College Football Playoff last year, but lost to Washington in the national semifinals. The Longhorns also won the Big 12 Conference in their final season as a member. Texas will be looking to return to the CFP, trailing quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning.
It will not be easy. The SEC is unquestionably the toughest conference in college football. Alabama and Georgia have dominated the league in recent years, winning both the conference and the CFP championships. Things are changing, though, as famed coach Nick Saban announced his retirement from Alabama following last season. Texas is still recruiting some of the best players in the country, and the move from the Big 12 to the SEC should be less challenging than some think.
Ffrench’s services would undoubtedly benefit the Longhorns in the years ahead. Texas football will play their first game of the 2024 season on August 31, against Colorado State. The school also has a major non-conference matchup against Michigan before their first SEC Conference game against Mississippi State on September 28.
