Many members of the Dallas Cowboys’ organization see this season as all or nothing. Head coach Mike McCarthy has failed to guide the team past the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs, with a 1-3 playoff record since being hired by the organization. McCarthy must lead Dallas to an extended postseason run or he will be searching for work elsewhere next season, as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones declined to give him a contract extension in the winter.
While the Cowboys are attempting to focus on returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995, there are still some critical financial things to resolve. Quarterback Dak Prescott is due for a contract extension and has a strong case for becoming the highest-paid NFL player.
CeeDee Lamb, a wide receiver, is also up for a contract extension. Justin Jefferson’s four-year, $140 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings has reset the wide receiver market. Since Dallas must pay Prescott, some believe the Cowboys could attempt to trade Lamb to save money.
NFL Analyst Suggest the Dallas Cowboys Trade CeeDee Lamb to the Green Bay Packers
Lamb, as many fans know, is not currently attending Dallas’ mandated minicamp because he wants to finalize his new contract as soon as possible. It is also possible that he is attempting to obtain as much, if not more, as Jefferson did under his contract.
If the Cowboys do not want to pay Lamb and he refuses to play without a new contract, Dallas could consider shipping him. According to Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, the Green Bay Packers are one of the teams the Cowboys could potentially trade Lamb to.
The Green Bay Packers have a bunch of solid receivers, but they’re not great or established. However, in a big year for Jordan Love and his teammates, the team may want to go big with Lamb and sacrifice two of them because they’ve created the depth to make the trade.
Essentially, they’ve become top-heavy.
In this situation, we propose that Dallas sign one primary slot guy to more directly replace Lamb (Jayden Reed) and one of two skilled but generally underwhelming outside figures.
All are cheap right now, and the Cowboys would be silly to pass them up, along with some Day 2 draft cash, ahead of such an odd-looking season.
If Lamb and the Cowboys cannot reach an agreement, this trade would give the Cowboys two good young wide receivers with years remaining on their rookie contracts. That second-round pick would also be an enticing addition to the trade.
However, that does not appear to be the type of transaction the Packers would make.
The Green Bay Packers Will Not Participate in a CeeDee Lamb Trade
As far as Dallas is concerned, this trade would be an excellent steal, especially if Christian Watson has genuinely resolved his hamstring concerns and remains healthy throughout the season. He has the potential to be a true wide receiver and has two years (this season and next) remaining on his rookie contract. Last season, Jayden Reed established the Packers’ franchise record for rookie receptions, led the team in receiving yards, and tied for the lead in touchdowns.
As previously stated, they are both under contract for their rookie deals. Green Bay, which also needs to extend the deal of its quarterback, Jordan Love, is unlikely to be in a position to sign a wide receiver who wants to be among the most paid in the league. If he refuses to play for Dallas without a new contract, he will not play for Green Bay, either.
