The Seattle Mariners are adding a player from the opposite coast.
Mariners writer Ty Dane Gonzalez tweeted on Monday that the team had signed Victor Robles, a former Washington Nationals outfielder. Seattle had recently sent fellow outfielder Jonatan Clase down to Triple-A Tacoma, freeing up a space on the active roster.
The right-handed hitting Robles, 27, is a former top prospect who spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Nationals, winning the 2019 World Series championship. Robles also had his finest year in the major leagues in 2019, hitting. In 155 games, he hit 255, with 17 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases.
However, Robles was felled in recent years by injuries and ineffectiveness. He was limited to 36 games for Washington in 2023 due to lingering back troubles, and his batting average was abysmal. He appeared in 120 games this season before being DFA’d by the Nationals last month.
Meanwhile, the 34-27 Mariners are now in first place, although they are in the worst AL West this season. They recently changed their coaching staff and are now adding extra outfield depth in Robles, who may platoon with lefty-hitting outfielders Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone.
