BOSTON (WHDH) — Drake Maye is enthusiastic about being in Boston.
“The fans are just awesome,” Maye stated in an interview with 7’s Marlee Wierda. “It’s such a great sports town.”
Since he was selected third in the NFL Draft, his schedule has been jam-packed with workouts and practices. But he has made time to watch the Bruins and Celtics in the playoffs.
“At the Bruins game, me and one of my receivers went together, Jaylen Polk, and we got stormed up there on the concourse,” Maye recalled. “The Celtics game I attended was fantastic; everyone was revved up. I think it’s the finest part about Boston – terrific people that enjoy winning, so we have something in common.”
Maye also mentioned getting to speak with Jayson Tatum at the Celtics game.
“I’m a big fan of Jayson, even though he went to Duke, a little rivalry in college, but big fan and best of luck to them in the finals,” Maye stated. “I think it was an hour before the game, so he was pretty locked in, but I think he said congrats and welcome to Boston and I’m sure I’ll see him around.”
Maye, like Tatum, joins a famous squad with big expectations. He’s learning what it takes to win from new head coach Jarod Mayo, who has brought new enthusiasm to the team.
“I believe the finest thing is the vibe around the locker.
Mayo’s appointment as head coach marks the beginning of a new chapter for the squad, according to Maye.
“It’s one of the advantages of being here with Coach Mayo his first year. We rookies are kind of starting together and getting something going, not feeling like you have to catch up on some of the culture and the work. I think there’s already something set in the Patriots about working hard — no shortcuts — and the proof is in the pudding. Coach Mayo is continuing some of this. We have a fantastic thing going.
When asked if he had realized he may be the Patriots’ next franchise quarterback, Maye responded no.
