“We need one more guy who can compete. It doesn’t matter to me which position it is, whether it’s a 1/2, a 2/1, a 2/3, or a 3/2,” Pearl remarked in a brief media availability on May 20 before of his Fore The Kids Golf Classic. “But there will be one more guard. We tried to be very patient in order to find the correct match.”
Kelly joins The Plains after a junior season at Georgia Tech, where he averaged 13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Last season, Kelly led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 13.9 points per game. Kelly shot 36.9% from the field and 32.1% from beyond the three-point line.
Kelly had eight games of 20 or more points last season, the highest of which was a 36-point outburst vs Louisville. Kelly shot 11-for-20 from the field and 6-for-11 from three-point range in the loss to Louisville.
Kelly was slightly more efficient the previous year, during the 2022-23 season, shooting 41% from the field and 37.9% from beyond the arc. Kelly ended his second season with an average of 14.4 points per game.
Kelly was rated a 4-star talent in high school and the third-best prospect in Virginia by 247Sports for the class of 2021.
Kelly had offers from Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina State, and Texas A&M before deciding on Georgia Tech.
Auburn has reset its guard room now that Kelly has joined the team.
“I think that’s the last piece — one more impactful guard,” Pearl remarked on May 20. “When you consider what we’ve lost, you lose four guards: Aden (Holloway), Tre (Donaldson), K.D. (Johnson), and Lior (Berman). And what did we bring in? We’ve recruited JP (Pegues), Tahaad (Pettiford), and Jahki (Howard).”
And, with Sunday’s news, the Tigers have found their final piece in Kelly.
