LSU sophomore cornerback Jeremiah Hughes announced his transfer to the Spartans via social media on Friday. This occurred only a few hours after Michigan State received a commitment from former Central Florida starting safety Nikai Martinez.
After spring practice, Hughes entered the portal last month and visited UCLA and Colorado before committing to the Spartans. He has three seasons of eligibility left.

Under first-year coach Jonathan Smith, Michigan State’s defensive backfield is being overhauled. Hughes is the secondary’s fourth transfer addition this spring (11th overall), joining Martinez, North Carolina’s Lejond Cavazos, and Arizona State’s Ed Woods.

The Spartans have lost 17 scholarship players to the portal this spring, including six defensive backs, led by starting safety Jaden Mangham. Dillon Tatum and true freshman Chance Rucker were the primary cornerbacks last season, while Mangham and sophomore Malik Spencer played safety. Tatum worked at safety and Spencer at nickelback in the spring, Angelo Grose has started at both positions, and veteran cornerback Charles Brantley is among those returning.
