Slot cornerback is one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ major priorities as OTAs begin. The squad has possibilities such as Josiah Scott, Thomas Graham, and Beanie Bishop, but none of them stand out as the definitive answer for the position. However, Patrick Peterson is a free agent who has expressed interest in returning to Pittsburgh.

Last year, the Steelers trusted Peterson to play all over the field. For the first time in his career, Peterson played both safety and slot cornerback. They might need someone with Peterson’s veteran football knowledge and understanding. On Tuesday, Peterson expressed hope for a comeback to the Steelers.

“We’ve still got time left on the table,” Peterson said “The Jim Rome Show.” “Hopefully, I can do something with the Steelers. That is the team I would most like to play for because I admire Coach Tomlin.”

The Steelers have remained noncommittal about the notion, but Mike Tomin has not dismissed it. General manager Omar Khan stated following the NFL Draft that the organization will proceed with the assumption that none of the three aforementioned slot cornerback options would return. But the door isn’t totally closed.

“You know, they aren’t on the team right now.” So, until they join the squad, we have to look at every possible way to better the position, increase competition, and meet the needs,” Khan added.

The Steelers cut Patrick Peterson in March to clear cap space, but the move left a gap in the secondary. They somewhat compensated by dealing Diontae Johnson for Donte Jackson. Jackson is projected as the outside cornerback opposite Joey Porter Jr., but the team is still looking for a clear solution in the slot. Peterson might be one of the players the team looks to for answers.
