White is the latest in a long line of driving-related issues for Georgia’s football team.
Sacovie White, a Georgia freshman wide receiver, was arrested Saturday morning on charges of reckless driving and driving on a one-way street. According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Jail Log, White was arrested at 3:04 a.m. and released about an hour later on a $26 bond.
According to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, White’s arrest marks the 18th time someone linked with Georgia football has been imprisoned or cited for a traffic offense since January 2023. Georgia running back Trevor Etienne Jr., a highly touted transfer from Florida, was arrested in March for DUI, dangerous driving, and two misdemeanors. Etienne still took part in Georgia’s spring game.
“I can only speak for my university, but I think we do it better than anybody in the country,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in March when asked about educating his players on the hazards of speeding following Etienne’s arrest.
White is in his first semester at Georgia, having signed as a three-star prospect in the Class of 2024. He recorded two catches for 29 yards and one touchdown in Georgia’s spring game.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound White received an early offer from Georgia and committed to the Bulldogs in October 2022. He never wavered, signing in December and joining the team in time for spring practice.
Georgia experienced a surge in speeding-related accidents in the months following the Jan. 15, 2023 crash that killed recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock. From February to July 2023, ten different athletes were arrested on various crimes, including Jalen Carter, the future first-round defensive lineman.
