The New Orleans Saints are approaching a fascinating 2024 NFL season, with a lot of doubts regarding their future. The quarterback position is arguably the team’s biggest question mark. Will Derek Carr have a better second season with the team, or will the team split ways with him?
Carr got a lucrative free agent contract last summer. While the Saints expected him to help them return to the playoffs, Carr did not impress. He didn’t play poorly, but he wasn’t very outstanding.
If Carr does not impress this season, the New Orleans Saints may consider moving on. One quarterback in particular has been touted as a potential target for New Orleans based on how things go in 2024.
New Orleans Saints Could Pursue Huge QB Trade Following 2024 Season
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell published a story about Kirk Cousins’ prospective future. If the Atlanta Falcons decide to move on after 2024 and give Michael Penix Jr. a chance to start, numerous teams would be interested in dealing for the experienced quarterback. He includes the Saints on the list.
“The Giants, Jets, Saints, Seahawks, and even the Dolphins could be looking for a veteran starter.” If Cousins performs well in 2024 and both he and the Falcons want to split, there will be a market for him the following year.”
Cousins must first demonstrate his ability to return to form after suffering a devastating Achilles injury last season. He is 35 years old, which makes recuperation from that type of damage considerably more challenging.
For the New Orleans Saints, a healthy Cousins would be preferable to Carr. Cousins has been a driving force in offenses for his whole career. The same cannot be said about Carr.
Granted, the Saints are pretty excited about rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler. They feel he can be their long-term quarterback. However, they may want to nurture him for a few years before putting him on the field, as the Green Bay Packers did with Jordan Love.
All of that being said, it will be fascinating to watch the Kirk Cousins scenario in Atlanta. He was upset that the franchise picked Penix, and a divorce may occur shortly.
If he becomes available next summer and Carr does not play well, the New Orleans Saints would be an ideal trade destination.
