The Atlanta Falcons remained interested in Bud Dupree during the offseason. The veteran pass rusher was an important part of Atlanta’s defense in 2023, and he was perhaps the team’s greatest all-around edge rusher. Bud Dupree has officially agreed to accept a two-year contract with the Chargers and join Harbaugh’s defense.
It’s unlikely that the Falcons were willing to match the Chargers’ second-year offer. Bud Dupree was an excellent experienced addition, but Atlanta’s limited salary space and long-term need for the position prevented this from being a perfect match.
For the Chargers, you already have your franchise pass rusher and excellent defensive players. They’re working their way out of a difficult cap scenario, and Dupree provides cheap depth with a great ceiling. Given what happened the last time a head coach took over an NFL position, Harbaugh’s club is one to keep an eye on.
Atlanta’s inability to re-sign Dupree or Campbell is concerning given the roster’s pass-rushing alternatives. There is optimism for Ebiketie to improve with more snaps, but there are glaring issues about his run defense and finishing ability. Even if the edge makes this leap, will he develop enough to stay on the field?
Lorenzo Carter is a finished product at this stage, an effort guy who will struggle to get to the quarterback while excelling at run defense. This eliminates any chance of improvement for rookie Trice.
Historically, even developing pass rushers do not have impressive debut seasons. Expecting Trice to respond instantly is wrong. While he will play a role, the youngster should not be expected to be the primary pass rusher this season.
With minimal financial room, the Falcons should still look into prospective free agent signings and who they could bring in to improve their youthful pass rush.
