Mike Young, the head coach of Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball team, keeps busy. Shortly after losing guard Jordan Ivy-Curry via the transfer portal (after committing to the Hokies in March), Young added a former top-80 national recruit to Tech’s 2024 roster.
Jaden Schutt, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard from Yorkville, Illinois, announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Saturday night. Schutt comes to Blacksburg after spending two seasons at Duke. Schutt was the 78th-ranked player in the 2022 recruiting class and a member of Duke’s first class under head coach Jon Scheyer.
Schutt entered the transfer portal on April 15 and received strong interest from several colleges, but ultimately chose Young and the Hokies. Young’s offensive style is ideal for a sharpshooter like Schutt. When Schutt graduated from high school, some regarded him the best shooter in the 2022 recruiting class.
Schutt appeared in 14 games as a true freshman in 2022-23, scoring 2.1 points per game and shooting 35% from three in limited opportunities. Schutt redshirted last season and had knee surgery in January.
Schutt is one of seven Duke players who have entered the transfer portal, and the third to move to another ACC school, joining TJ Power (Virginia) and Christian Reeves (Clemson). He is the fifth player to pledge to Virginia Tech through the portal.

The Hokies also have three freshmen enrolling for next season, including recently committed guard Benjamin Hammond. Forward Ryan Jones is the highlight of Tech’s 2024 recruiting class.
Young isn’t done with the transfer portal. He now has one more scholarship to add after Ivy-Curry backed out of his pledge.
